Foram desmatados dez vezes o tamanho do estado do Rio de Janeiro em menos de 4 décadas
Segundo um levantamento do MapBiomas, divulgado nesta sexta-feira (02), a amazônia perdeu o equivalente a 12% de suas florestas nos últimos 37 anos.
Foram 44, 5 milhões de hectares perdidos, principalmente no estado do Pará, com a derrubada da mata para virar pasto ou agricultura.
Segundo o levantamento, a agropecuária é o principal vetor de desmatamento da região. Em 2021, a agropecuária ocupava 15% do bioma.
“O atual modelo de desenvolvimento econômico, baseado na conversão descontrolada de áreas de vegetação natural, coloca o Brasil frente a graves problemas no atual cenário de mudanças do clima”, explica Tasso Azevedo, coordenador do MapBiomas.
Dentre todos os estados que compõem a Amazônia Legal, o Pará foi o mais desmatado, com 35,2% das florestas convertidas em áreas de agricultura ou pastagem. O estado também tem uma estrada ilegal que atravessa áreas protegidas.
Ainda de acordo com o levantamento, a Amazônia perdeu 14,5% de água, sendo Roraima o estado mais afetado. Em 25 anos houve uma redução de 53%.
Outro ponto de atenção é o avanço do garimpo. Em 2021, a atividade respondeu por três em cada quatro hectares (74%) mapeados como mineração na Amazônia. Dos pouco mais de 217 mil ha de área minerada no bioma, 64% foram mapeados no estado do Pará. Esse estado é também o que registrou maior expansão urbana nos últimos 37 anos.
Pouco mais da metade (54,3%) das áreas florestais remanescentes estão em áreas legalmente protegidas, como Terras Indígenas e Unidades de Conservação (exceto APA) – percentual semelhante ao das formações campestres que estão dentro de áreas protegidas (58,7%).
“Os recentes recordes de desmatamento e de queimadas comprovam que a Amazônia não está protegida. É importante ressaltar que não se trata apenas de desmatamento: parte da floresta remanescente está degradada. Esse processo coloca a floresta mais perto do ponto de inflexão a partir do qual ela entra em colapso”, alerta Luis Oliveira Jr., que integra a equipe Amazônia do MapBiomas
Em julho deste ano, a divulgação do segundo o Relatório Anual de Desmatamento no Brasil (RAD), do MapBiomas demonstrou que só nos últimos três anos (2019-2021) o Brasil perdeu quase um Estado do Rio de Janeiro de vegetação nativa.
