O cartunista Paulo Caruso, de 73 anos, morreu na manhã deste sábado (4) em São Paulo. Ele estava internado no Hospital 9 de Julho, no Centro da capital paulista, e lutava contra um câncer no intestino que descobriu em 2017.
O velório do cartunista acontece na manhã deste domingo (5). O enterro está marcado para segunda-feira somente para a família e os amigos.
Paulo José Hespanha Caruso, um dos maiores cartunistas do país, nasceu na capital paulista em 6 de dezembro de 1949. Ele era irmão gêmeo de Chico Caruso, também cartunista.
Cursou arquitetura na Universidade de São Paulo (USP) no início dos anos 1970, mas não exerceu a profissão. Em 1985, no Salão de Humor de Piracicaba, no interior de São Paulo, uniu a paixão pela música ao amor pelos cartuns e montou uma banda só com cartunistas.
Paulo teve uma trajetória individual bem marcada, mas nunca deixou de fazer parceria com o irmão.
Segundo o próprio Paulo, os dois começaram cedo na arte do desenho.
“Desde os 4, 5 anos de idade a gente desenhava sem parar, incentivado pelo nosso avô materno, que era pintor amador, pegava na mão da gente e ensinava a desenhar. Foi quem me ensinou a tocar violão também.”
A política, emendou, “a gente pegou com 14 anos, em 64 veio o golpe”. O irmão dele, Chico contou que em 1969, com 18 anos, eles estavam começando a trabalhar em jornal, “aí a politização foi quase uma obrigação”.
Paulo Caruso começou a vida profissional no “Diário Popular” no final da década de 1960 e também colaborou com os jornais “Folha de S.Paulo” e “Movimento”. Caruso participou do programa Roda Viva, da TV Cultura, desde 1987. Sua última participação foi no dia 2 de janeiro, com a entrevista do ministro Rui Costa.
Nos anos 1970, foi para “O Pasquim”, ao lado de Millôr Fernandes (1923-2012), Jaguar e Ziraldo. A partir de 1988, publicou, na revista “IstoÉ”, a coluna de humor Avenida Brasil, onde sintetizou, com sátira e humor, vários momentos da história política do país.
Em 1992, lançou o livro “Avenida Brasil”, em que reuniu centenas de charges políticas, publicadas em jornais e revistas. O principal foco, na época, era o presidente Fernando Collor de Mello. Também é autor de “As Origens do Capitão Bandeira” (1983), ”Ecos do Ipiranga” (1984), “Bar Brasil na Nova República” (1986) e “A Transição pela Via das Dúvidas” (1989).
Além disso escreveu também São Paulo por Paulo Caruso – Um Olhar Bem-Humorado sobre Esta Cidade (2004), em homenagem aos 450 anos da capital.
“A matéria-prima é toda fornecida pelo governo. Eu acho que nós, cartunistas, deveríamos virar ‘estatal’ porque nós dependemos tanto do governo para nossa produção”, brincou.
Recebeu vários prêmios, entre eles, o de melhor desenhista, pela Associação Paulista dos Críticos de Arte – APCA, em 1994.
