O ex-presidente Jair Bolsonaro afirmou em depoimento à Polícia Federal (PF), que durou cerca 3 horas, que ficou sabendo da existência das joias sauditas apreendidas em 2021 pela Receita Federal em dezembro de 2022, mais de um ano após elas terem chegado ao país. Bolsonaro disse também que não se lembra de quem o avisou da apreensão das joias pela Receita Federal.
Bolsonaro disse que, na visão dele, se essas joias ficassem perdidas, retidas na Receita Federal, isso poderia chegar aos ouvidos do governo saudita, o que poderia causar constrangimento. O ex-presidente disse também que buscou verificar a regularidade dos procedimentos, das normas aplicadas a esse caso, que tinham a finalidade, segundo ele, de evitar o que classificou de um “vexame diplomático” com a Arábia Saudita.
O depoimento na sede da PF em Brasília foi sobre os três conjuntos de joias dados de presente pelo governo da Arábia Saudita a ele e à ex-primeira-dama Michelle Bolsonaro.
O conjunto retido pela Receita estava na mochila de um assessor do Ministério de Minas e Energia, que voltava com uma comitiva da pasta de uma viagem oficial à Arábia Saudita, em outubro de 2021. O assessor, Marcos Soeiro, tentou passar pela alfândega sem declarar as joias, o que é irregular. Na ocasião, o então ministro de Minas e Energia, Bento Albuquerque, que também estava na comitiva, disse que as joias eram para Michelle.
Outros dois conjuntos de joias conseguiram entrar no país, também sem ser declarados. Após o caso se tornar público, em reportagem do jornal “O Estado de S. Paulo” em fevereiro deste ano, Bolsonaro foi obrigado pelo Tribunal de Contas da União (TCU) a devolver para o Estado esses dois conjuntos.
O inquérito da PF apura se o ex-presidente cometeu o crime de peculato ao tentar ficar com as joias, em especial um conjunto, avaliado em R$ 16 milhões. Peculato ocorre quando um funcionário público se apropria de dinheiro ou bens dos quais tem posse em razão de seu cargo. A pena varia de 2 a 12 anos de prisão, além do pagamento de multa.
