George Santos responde por fraude, lavagem de dinheiro e roubo de fundos públicos
O deputado republicano dos Estados Unidos George Santos, o brasileiro que admitiu ter mentido sobre seu currículo, foi detido nesta quarta-feira (10), informou o Departamento de Justiça.
Santos, que é acusado de fraude, lavagem de dinheiro e roubo de fundos públicos, se entregou nesta manhã em um tribunal de Nova York, ainda segundo o Departamento de Justiça norte-americano. Ele havia sido convocado a depor nesta quarta.
George Santos, de 34 anos, foi eleito deputado nos EUA em novembro do ano passado pelo Partido Republicamo. Sua eleição chamou a atenção por ele ser o primeiro republicano abertamente gay a concorrer e conquistar um assento na Câmara de Deputados do país.
Logo após sua eleição, no entanto, o jornal “The New York Times” e outros meios de comunicação revelaram que ele havia inventado quase todos os aspectos de sua vida pessoal e profissional, prinicipalmente lugares onde ele estudou e trabalhou nos EUA e detalhes sobre a trajetória de sua mãe (leia mais abaixo).
Santos reconheceu que mentiu, mas minimizou o caso e disse que não renunciaria. Na terça-feira (9), o caso entrou oficialmente na esfera judicial, quando promotores federais apresentaram acusações criminais contra Santos, pela primeira vez desde que o caso veio à tona.
A denúncia da Procuradoria contra Santos inclui:
- Sete acusações de fraude eletrônica;
- Três acusações de lavagem de dinheiro;
- Uma acusação de roubo de fundos públicos;
- Duas acusações de mentir à Câmara dos Deputados.

- Ter diplomas da Universidade de Nova York e do Baruch College, apesar de nenhuma das instituições ter registro de sua frequência.
- Ter trabalhado nos bancos Goldman Sachs e Citigroup
- Que é judeu e que seus avós escaparam dos nazistas durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.
- Que sua mãe foi uma dos sobreviventes do atentado contras as Torres Gêmeas de Nova York em 2001.
Além das informações falsas, Santos não revelou ainda que foi casado com uma mulher por vários anos, terminando em 2019.
