A Índia se tornou o 1º ou o 2º país no mundo a conseguir pousar no lado escuro da Lua, região inexplorada que fica no polo sul do satélite.

“Conseguimos pouso suave na Lua, a Índia está na Lua”, disse Sreedhara Panicker Somanath, presidente da Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), uma espécie de “Nasa” indiana.

O módulo espacial foi lançado no dia 14 de julho e pousou na superfície lunar por volta das 9h33 desta quarta, horário de Brasília.

“Este é o momento para uma nova Índia em desenvolvimento”, comemorou Narendra Modi, primeiro-ministro do país.

A China também disse que alcançou a conquista inédita em janeiro de 2019 em um pouso no chamado lado escuro da lua. 

Os Estados Unidos, a então União Soviética e, mais recentemente, a China, enviaram espaçonaves para o lado mais próximo da lua, voltado para a Terra, mas este foi o primeiro ou o segundo pouso no outro lado.

A Administração Espacial Nacional da China disse que o pouso às 10h26 do explorador lunar Chang’e-4 “abriu um novo capítulo na exploração lunar humana”.

A superfície lunar é um terreno traiçoeiro com grandes crateras e encostas íngremes, além de não receber luz solar, levando a temperaturas extremamente baixas, que chegam a -203°C, e tornando muito difícil operar os equipamentos de exploração. Dessa forma, um pouso suave significa que o módulo não foi destruído.

A Índia explora a Lua  com a missão chamada Chandrayaan-3 – porque a primeira viagem espacial desse projeto, que ocorreu em 2008, detectou a presença de água na superfície lunar.

“Ainda precisamos de muito mais detalhes sobre onde e quanta água existe, e saber se toda ela está congelada“, explica Akash Sinha, professor de robótica espacial na Universidade Shiv Nadar University, perto de Delhi, à BBC.

A exploração da superfície das regiões polares da Lua, compostas de rochas e solo, também pode dar respostas sobre a formação do Sistema Solar.

O objetivo do país se tornou explorar a Lua com o menor custo possível. Isso porque a segunda missão, que ocorreu em 2019 e deu errado (o foguete explodiu no pouso), custou US$ 140 milhões, enquanto a desta manhã foi de um pouco mais de US$ 80 milhões. A primeira, em 2009, foi em torno de US$ 79 milhões.
