O acordo deve ser firmado entre representantes do Atlético e da CBF. O pedido para equiparação do torneio foi apresentado em 2021 e entregue a setores jurídicos e de competições da entidade. Documentos entregues pelo clube, no ano passado, à CBF, alegam que o Torneio dos Campeões tinha o mesmo peso de um Campeonato Brasileiro na década de 1930.
O Atlético tomou por base a equiparação ao Campeonato Brasileiro de competições como a Taça Brasil e o Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa, realizadas entre 1959 e 1970.
Se o acordo for firmado nesta sexta-feira, o clube mineiro poderá ostentar seu terceiro título brasileiro — os outros dois foram conquistados em 1971 e em 2021.
Na década de 1930, a Federação Brasileira de Futebol (FBF) cuidava dos times profissionais, enquanto a CBD (atual CBF) cuidava dos times amadores e também da seleção brasileira.
Em 1937, o Torneio dos Campeões foi realizado pela FBF e contava com o Atlético, que foi campeão estadual no ano anterior, o Fluminense, campeão carioca, a Portuguesa, campeã paulista, e o Rio Branco, campeão capixaba, além de um time da Marinha que venceu o Aliança, de Campos, mas foi eliminado pelo time do Espírito Santo.
Os quatro times se enfrentaram em jogos de ida e volta. O campeão seria o que tivesse mais pontos. O Galo conquistou 9 e foi campeão.
