Mauro Cid afirmou que o ex-presidente Jair Bolsonaro, foi ameaçado de prisão pelo comandante do Exército, general Freire Gomes em reunião para discutir um golpe de Estado. Ele não apenas disse a Bolsonaro que o Exército não compactuava com um golpe como afirmou à queima-roupa: “Se o senhor for em frente com isso, serei obrigado a prendê-lo”.
Apesar de setores das Forças Armadas estarem favoráveis a um golpe, não havia condições de fazê-lo. Freire Gomes sabia que oa comandantes do Sul Fernando Soares, do Sudeste, Thomaz Paiva, do Leste André Novaes e do Nordeste Richard Nunes não apoiariam.

O brigadeiro Carlos Batista, da Aeronáutica, ficou calado, e quem enfrentou o presidente foi o comandante do Exército.
Garnier não participou da cerimônia de posse de seu substituto no comando da Marinha, como Bolsonaro não participou da posse de Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
