Os chilenos rejeitaram neste domingo (17) uma nova constituição e mantiveram o texto atual, da era da ditadura de Augusto Pinochet.
Com 99,65% das urnas apuradas, 55,76% dos chilenos votaram contra a mudança e 44,24% foram a favor.
Este é o segundo projeto de Constituição que os eleitores rejeitam para substituir o seu texto atual, um processo nascido depois de protestos contra a desigualdade realizados desde 2019.
“O país ficou polarizado, dividido”, disse o presidente Gabriel Boric durante um discurso transmitido na TV chilena. Ele acrescentou que o resultado mostra que o processo “não canalizou as esperanças de ter uma nova constituição escrita por todos”.
Boric reiterou que seu governo não buscaria uma terceira reescrita e avançaria com a reforma previdenciária e tributária através da legislatura. “O que os cidadãos exigem é uma melhor capacidade de diálogo, de consenso, mas acima de tudo de ação”, disse Boric.
O plebiscito sobre uma nova Constituição poderia substituir o texto criado na ditadura do general Augusto Pinochet, que durou de 1973 a 1990. Esta foi a segunda tentativa em pouco mais de um ano de aprovar uma nova versão do documento.
A pressão para reescrever a Constituição chilena aumentou há quatro anos. Em 2019, depois que o governo do então presidente Sebastián Piñera anunciou aumento na tarifa de metrô, manifestantes foram às ruas pedir um novo texto constitucional.
A primeira tentativa de substituir a Constituição de Pinochet aconteceu em 2022. O texto escrito por um órgão dominado por vozes de esquerda garantia proteções ambientais extensas e uma ampla gama de direitos, mas foi rejeitado pelos eleitores.
Uma nova assembleia foi eleita, agora dominada pela direita. A reformulação proposta pelo órgão é considerada mais conservadora do que a Constituição em vigor.
