Antonis Antoniou, um dos autores do artigo, explica que o exame de sangue PSA (antígeno prostático específico), usado principalmente no rastreamento da doença, nem sempre é uma opção estratégica.
“Esses testes são, muitas vezes, falso positivo, o que significa que muitos homens seriam biopsiados desnecessariamente. Além disso, muitos tumores de próstata identificados por testes de PSA são de crescimento lento e não seriam fatais. O tratamento desses tumores pode fazer mais mal do que bem”, justifica o também pesquisador do Departamento de Saúde Pública e Atenção Primária da universidade britânica.
Para chegar ao primeiro modelo abrangente de câncer de próstata, o grupo usou dados genéticos e de histórico familiar de quase 17 mil famílias. A equipe também considerou dados sobre falhas genéticas raras e uma pontuação baseada em 268 variantes comuns de baixo risco para a enfermidade.
A única forma de garantir a cura do câncer de próstata é o diagnóstico precoce. No Brasil, o SUS oferece tratamento em hospitais habilitados em oncologia, incluindo exames clínicos, procedimentos cirúrgicos e tratamentos, como prevê a Política Nacional para a Prevenção e Controle do Câncer (PNPCC).

Star Entertainment’s board has agreed to hand control of the casino group to US-based
Bally’s Corporation in a $300 million deal that will stave off financial collapse once
