A decisão foi tomada nesta sexta-feira (8) pelos diretores da instituição, como punição pelo tapa que ele deu em Chris Rock na premiação de 2022. O ator já havia renunciado como membro da Academia.
A proibição diz respeito à presença nos eventos. A decisão não impede que Will Smith seja indicado ao prêmio neste período e nem tira a estatueta que ele ganhou de melhor ator em 2022.
“Eu aceito e respeito a decisão da Academia”, disse Will Smith em comunicado enviado a veículos de imprensa dos EUA.
O Conselho da Academia inclui artistas como os diretores Steven Spielberg e Ava DuVernay e as atrizes Laura Dern e Whoopi Goldberg entre seus membros.
Carta divulgada pelo presidente da Academia, David Rubin, sobre a decisão:
“A 94ª edição do Oscar deveria ser uma celebração dos muitos indivíduos em nossa comunidade que fizeram um trabalho incrível no ano passado; no entanto, esses momentos foram ofuscados pelo comportamento inaceitável e prejudicial que vimos o Sr. Smith exibir no palco.
Durante nossa transmissão, não abordamos adequadamente a situação na sala. Por isso, lamentamos. Esta foi uma oportunidade para darmos um exemplo para nossos convidados, espectadores e nossa família da Academia em todo o mundo, e ficamos aquém, despreparados para o fato inédito.
Hoje, o Conselho de Diretores convocou uma reunião para discutir a melhor forma de responder às ações de Will Smith no Oscar, além de aceitar sua renúncia. O Conselho decidiu, por um período de 10 anos a partir de 8 de abril de 2022, que o Sr. Smith não poderá participar de nenhum evento ou programa da Academia, pessoalmente ou virtualmente, incluindo, entre outros, o Oscar.
Queremos expressar nossa profunda gratidão ao Sr. Rock por manter a compostura em circunstâncias extraordinárias. Também queremos agradecer aos nossos anfitriões, indicados, apresentadores e vencedores por sua postura e graça durante nossa transmissão.
