Polícia de Londres confirmou a prisão de um homem de 72 anos sob suspeita de má conduta em cargo público, mas protegeu sua identidade e não confirmou que é Peter Mandelson, assim como no dia da detenção do ex-príncipe Andrew
O ex-embaixador do Reino Unido nos Estados Unidos Peter Mandelson foi preso nesta segunda-feira (23), em Londres, sob suspeita de má conduta no exercício de cargo público no contexto das investigações relacionadas ao financista americano Jeffrey Epstein.
Aos 72 anos, Mandelson foi detido por agentes da Polícia Metropolitana após mandados de busca cumpridos em endereços ligados a ele em Camden, na capital britânica, e em Wiltshire.
Segundo as autoridades, a investigação apura se o ex-diplomata compartilhou informações confidenciais do governo britânico com Epstein há cerca de 15 anos. Entre os dados que estariam sob análise estão comunicações internas do período em que o país era governado pelo então primeiro-ministro Gordon Brown, incluindo relatórios fiscais, discussões estratégicas e informações relacionadas à crise financeira europeia.
Mandelson foi conduzido para interrogatório e permanece sob investigação. Até o momento, não houve acusação formal, mas o crime de misconduct in public office, pelo qual ele é investigado, pode resultar em pena severa caso seja denunciado e condenado. A polícia informou que a apuração foi intensificada após a divulgação de e-mails por autoridades norte-americanas, que indicariam troca de mensagens entre o ex-embaixador e Epstein.
A relação entre Mandelson e o financista já havia gerado controvérsia anteriormente. Registros tornados públicos mostram que os dois mantinham contato frequente e que o político britânico teria se referido a Epstein em termos amistosos em comunicações privadas. Também vieram à tona mensagens nas quais Mandelson teria aconselhado Epstein após sua condenação em 2008 por crimes sexuais envolvendo menor de idade.
Em meio ao avanço das investigações, Mandelson deixou o cargo diplomático que ocupava e renunciou ao Partido Trabalhista e à Câmara dos Lordes. Ele é casado com o brasileiro Reinaldo Ávila da Silva. Em manifestações públicas anteriores, afirmou que se arrepende de ter mantido contato com Epstein e declarou que jamais cometeu qualquer irregularidade.
A prisão amplia a dimensão política do caso no Reino Unido e coloca pressão sobre o primeiro-ministro Keir Starmer, responsável por sua nomeação para o posto em Washington. A Scotland Yard informou que novas diligências não estão descartadas e que o inquérito permanece em andamento, sem prazo definido para eventual indiciamento ou apresentação formal de acusações.
