O presidente dos Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, anunciou nesta quinta-feira (6) um perdão a todas as pessoas com condenação federal pela posse simples de maconha. Mais de 6,5 mil indivíduos condenados serão afetados pelo indulto.
Com isso, Biden dá seus primeiros passos para descriminalizar a maconha, cumprindo uma promessa de campanha de “limpar a ficha” de condenados por essa infração e iniciando o processo de afrouxar a classificação federal sobre a droga.
Além dos 6,5 mil beneficiados pelo país, a ação de Biden também abrange milhares de condenados pelo crime no Distrito de Columbia, onde fica a capital Washington. Ele também pede aos governadores que emitam indultos semelhantes para os condenados por posse de maconha sob leis estaduais, que são a grande maioria no país.
Além do indulto, Biden disse que instruiu o secretário de Saúde e Serviços Humanos, Xavier Becerra, e o procurador-geral Merrick Garland a começar a revisar como a maconha é classificada sob as leis federais de drogas.
“O governo federal atualmente classifica a maconha como uma substância de ‘Programa 1’, o mesmo que heroína e LSD – e mais grave que o fentanil”, diz Biden. “Isso não faz sentido.”
“Mandar pessoas para a prisão por portar maconha arruinou muitas vidas e prendeu pessoas por conduta que muitos estados não proíbem mais”, explica Biden em comunicado.

“Existem milhares de pessoas que foram condenadas por porte de maconha que podem ter negado emprego, moradia ou oportunidades educacionais como resultado”, afirmou o presidente americano.
“Meu perdão removerá esse fardo que pesa sobre eles.”
