A visita irritou Pequim, que reivindica Taiwan como parte de seu território e prometeu fortes retaliações aos Estados Unidos. Até agora, no entanto, foi a ilha asiática que pagou o preço maior pela convidada norte-americana, com uma série de sanções anunciadas pela China.
Segundo o Ministério da Defesa de Taiwan, 22 aviões cruzaram o Estreito de Taiwan, o limite da fronteira com o espaço aéreo da China.
Pequim ainda não esclareceu se o sobrevoo fazia parte de algum exercício militar.
Na terça-feira (2), a China já havia enviado cerca de 30 aviões de guerra para sobrevoar o Estreito de Taiwan, no mesmo momento em que a aeronave dos Estados Unidos transportando Pelosi e sua comitiva se aproximavam da ilha.
Taiwan já começou a sofrer as consequências da visita de Pelosi. O governo local afirmou nesta quarta-feira que a China faz um bloqueio aeronaval não-oficial ao planejar exercícios militares em torno da ilha como retaliação.
A agência de notícias estatal informou que Taiwan já negocia com Japão e Filipinas rotas alternativas de avião, para furar o suposto bloqueio chinês.
Também nesta quarta-feira, Pequim anunciou sanções à ilha como a suspensão de importações de itens como frutas e produtos de pesca da ilha autônoma, além de paralisar as exportações de areia natural para Taiwan. A alfândega chinesa ainda suspendeu as importações de 35 exportadores taiwaneses de biscoitos e doces.
